Hard to know where to look for sure for online business marketing and sounds like Rollins got a rough deal but here he gives us more information on ways we can do this for ourselves. Great advice though for finding a good service and cheapest isn't always best, but high prices don't always mean high quality - don't forget that as well.

I was ripped off several years ago by a "reputable" seo company and I'm of the opinion that no such thing exists. So I started looking around and found things, like http://www.seoidiots.com and saw some sense in it - I should learn this stuff myself for my website. There's also stuff on http://www.bruceclay.com and http://www.webproworld.com and other sites - but nothing will protect people from the seo scammers. It seems to me that it is to easy to claim to be an seo person when in fact, that person is a novice and can no more do something for your marketing than you can do yourself. It also occurred to me that people who claim that PPC is search engine optimization just identify themselves as "seo frauds" - because PPC is buying advertising. It has nothing to do with optimizing the web site. If all you are going to do is PPC - then the site doesn't have to be touched at all except for usability and appeal to the visitor. At least now some of the people that used to do real seo are publishing all the facts so that folks can do this themselves without losing thousands of dollars - and all we have to do is spend the time doing it.

I'm a little disappointed by the job site you mentioned that lets employees bid. While some people may do the job for less, will they do it better? If not, are you really saving money? What kind of message is it giving to potential employees and partners, that you're willing to make people get in a job bidding war?

While it's important to spend wisely, no matter what the economy looks like, I definitely agree with you- there should be a balance between quality and cost.

All good points, Jenn. I especially love the spamming SEOs who send me spam with offers like you mentioned - when I'm an SEO myself! Obviously, they don't take the time to see what their potential prospects need - just buy a list, point and shoot. I think that says a lot about how they do business. ARGGGH!

I look at it this way - if they have to spam to get clients, they must not be very busy (or good).
